Fully automatic espresso machines: the step ahead?

The difference between semi-automatic and automatic espresso machine comes with the control that the user has over brewing process. On semi-automatic machines we control the moment brewing starts and the moment it finishes, and we can't leave the machine unsupervised untill the process is over.

While semi automatic espresso machines are preferable for home use, automatic machines are usualy recommended for cafe-bars; the advantage is the 'barista' will offer all the time, all the customers, the same quality espresso.

How to use the automatic machine

First of all we must say that automation works sometimes in the detriment of quality. Things are not different when it comes to automatic espresso machines. By quality we also mean the ability to brew the espresso to the taste of your guests for example. Or, your own. The real pro for automatic is convenience in use.

Otherwise, the process is very simple. You fill the portafilter with preground coffee, tamp, insert in the machine, push a button and (eventualy) set the water level. The machine will take care of the rest. You can mind other things while your espresso is done. The passionates don't consider this the real 'espresso time', but just another routine activity.

If you want to purchase an automatic machine for home use, your options are limited to few models that are derived from the semi-automatic ones.
